Attention New Jersey Forensic Nurses
Funding has become available for all counties
in New Jersey for existing and/or future SANE Programs.
The NJ-IAFN and the Forensic Forum for Nurses is taking the opportunity to reach out to interested nurses who would like to be involved in this exciting opportunity.
Funding (up to $100,000 per county) will be awarded to county Prosecutor's Offices to pay for forensic medical examinations for victims of sexual assault.
The application deadline is August 30, 1999.
- There is no restriction as to where the program must be based
- Funds include reimbursement for training of RNs as SANEs
(after the SANE has completed 6 months of service)
- Clinical competency evaluations of all SANEs are required
- Funds may also be applied to:
- On-call pay - up to $2/hr. in addition to the cost of the forensic examination fee to the SANE.
- Beepers for SANEs
- Hygiene kits for the sexual assault victims
- Individual county programs must comply with current NJ standards regarding the treatment of sexual assault victims.
- Each county will have a SANE Coordinator and county advisory committee.
The objectives are to foster the statewide implementation of the Sexual Assault Standards and promote a comprehensive multi-disciplinary response to sexual assault in the state, as well as the improvement of services to survivors of sexual assault, applying a victim-centered approach.
We see this as a wonderful and exciting opportunity for nurses to begin or enhance countywide SANE/SART Programs across NJ. It not only eliminates one of the major obstacles we face; money, but it recognizes, supports and promotes the advancement of Forensic Nursing statewide.
We also recognize the need for SANE Training Programs in response to this event. We are planning a SANE Training Conference with Dr. Linda Ledray within the next few months - STAND-BY.
A meeting is scheduled for Saturday July 24th, from 4-6pm, at NJSNA Headquarters in Trenton (click to link to directions to NJSNA/Trenton) to identify interested nurses from each county. Jamie Gilson, DAG, RN will be there to elaborate on the funding and answer any questions. Please try to attend to learn more about the specifics of the grant.
