Cumberland County
Status: Active SART.

Essex County
Status: SART under development.
Site: The long-term plan is for the larger hospitals within the county to each have their own 24-hour a day, 7-day a week coverage, utilizing both SANEs and SAFEs. This will include Beth Israel Hospital, UMDNJ in Newark, East Orange Hospital, Mountainside Hospital and St. Barnabas Hospital. The smaller hospitals within the county will be covered by a county SANE team. One SANE coordinator will cover both the county team and coordinate among the individual hospitals.

Update: Asst. Prosecutor Laurino calls this plan a "hybrid approach" to SANE/SART, which is necessary due to the large volume of sexual assaults (greater than 300 a year) reported in Essex County. Some of the larger hospitals, such as Beth Israel and UMDNJ, are already conducting SANE exams, utilizing SANEs, Physicians and SAFEs (Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner), who in this case are specially trained medical student interns.
Gloucester County
